In Hexen II, players choose from one of four character classes (Necromancer, Assassin, Crusader, and Paladin) and begin their quest to destroy Eidolon, the lone survivor from the original Hexen. Four different lands are broken into many sublevels, each of which contain a member of the Four Horsemen, who must be destroyed. Along the way, weapons, armor, and artifacts must be collected as players attempt to solve ancient puzzles, which will give access to other areas or items.
Quake. Fun in many ways, lacking in many others. As done in the past, Raven has taken the latest id technology and put together a dandy game. As with its predecessors, Hexen 2 combines role-playing elements with the gorgeous Quake engine in a way that will please both hard-core action game fans as well as role-playing game fans. The puzzles aren't brain busters, but they are no walk in the park either. Most of them consist of finding the right number of items and placing them in the correct spot, but some puzzles go a little bit deeper, much deeper than Quake anyhow.
Regardless of if you download the game here or own the cdrom for the following games=doom(1and2)=heretic=hexen=strife. There is a wonderful program called ZANDRONUM (forget dosbox for these games) download the free zandronum program and enjoy these games as they SHOULD be played, play them in the windows environment, I play using the mouse+WASD.

The premise is simple, four Serpent Riders are left in the world, and you have to dispel them. Each Serpent Rider is a boss of a 'hub' or a large area in the game. Unlike Quake, Hexen 2 isn't laid out in linear levels, instead there are large areas interconnected through portals. Each hub has its own specific time period that it's set in, giving the player a new experience in each hub. These time periods are Medieval, Greco-Roman, Egyptian, and Meso-American. This time around, there are four character classes, one greater than Hexen's original three. They include the Assassin, the Crusader, the Paladin, and the Necromancer. Each character has different weapons and different abilities. For example, the Assassin can hide in the shadows and at the brink of death the Paladin sometimes receives a healing gift from his god. Although each class only has 4 weapons, when you add all the weapons up: that's 16. Plus the Tome of Power which changes the effect of each weapon, bringing the grand total to 32. A refreshing variety after Quake's 8.
The graphics are, in a word, gorgeous. Raven's graphical ability can be traced all the way back to Heretic; in fact, Raven's games have always looked better than id's incarnations under the same engine. The characters are modeled splendidly, tapping once again from Raven's artistic talent. From spiders to flying gargoyles, Hexen 2 has it all. They've also taken id's particles to the next level - not only are they used for some explosions, they're used in fountains and in other environmental effects, it just looks great. Many complaints about Quake lay in the bland looking weapons. If you were one of those people, you won't be disappointed. Hexen 2's weapons are genuinely impressive and innovative. As Shakespeare and game evangelists would say, 'the play's the thing' and graphics don't matter. However, it's hard to say that after seeing this game (especially in 3dfx mode), it just looks phat (for those who don't speak ebonics: that means 'good').
Even with its graphic superiority, what stands out even more is the level design. From the towns of the medieval times to the pyramids of the ancient Egyptians, Raven has left no detail out. Break tables, smash statues, knock down book cases, crack windows. Like to break things? Don't want to get arrested for it? Hexen 2 is the game for you: you can interact with the environment more than any other first person action game on the market.
The sound? Its fine, but frankly, you don't notice it. Which isn't a bad thing, you'll be so immersed in this game you wont really be thinking about each sound effect, instead it'll be a complete experience. This level of immersion is what really makes Hexen 2 fun, an hour will pass and it'll seem like a minute. Hexen 2, in essence, is an action game with only a few RPG elements. It has puzzles, but your average bombastic grade school graduate should have no problem solving them. The multiplayer aspect is based exactly on Quake's, so don't expect many differences other than the obvious character class options. If you like action games but are bored by incessant violence, I highly reccomend Hexen 2.

Description of Hexen: Beyond Heretic
Heretic's sequel, Hexen: Beyond Heretic brings much more to the plate than its successful predecessor.
As one of the first FPS games to introduce character classes, Hexen quickly became a fan favourite at LAN parties, due to its co-op mode, when played over the network. Also, unlike other games of that era, its level design was not as linear, which gave it an open world feeling to it... though it does feel short (in comparison with Heretic).
The story is quite simple, as much as stories in such games go: there is a big baddy, Korax, the second of the Serpent Riders (the first of whom dies in Heretic), who will do anything to stop you from killing him (can you blame him?)
Enter you, the Warrior, Mage or Cleric who will not stand for such madness and will dispatch any and all minions using a plethora of weapons: a close-range Axe, a throwing hammer and an exploding sword (for the warrior), a mace, a shooting staff, a burning spell and what looks like a crucifix that spits out forsaken souls, that kill the baddies (Cleric) and all sorts of wands and spells doing different types of damage (frost, electrical and... blood!) for the Mage.
Obviously, Hexen (just as no other abandoned game) should not be judged by today's standards. However, when it came out, you could see clearly Raven had used Doom's engine (with some tweaks) and reused a lot of sprites and textures from the original Heretic game. Whether it was just sloppy design, trying to hit a deadline or simply trying to keep the spirit of the old game, it did leave some of us wanting.

The instructions above on how to play Hexen do not work with a Mac. You can not use C:GamesHexen, Mac will not allow it. I downloaded the RIP version of the game and it works, however the controls are stupid with no way to change them. You have to use the mouse, keyboard, or mouse and keyboard, none of which work very well. The keyboard is my preference on similar games using the arrow keys and a fire button, but on this version the arrow keys MOVE you left and right, they do not turn you left and right. Then you have to use the period and comma keys to turn, but the left button turns you right and the right button turns you left. The mouse/keyboard combo is not much better. I give the game a 1 star because of the controls.

As a late answer to KISSKIZZKISS's question, Raven Software released the source code to both Heretic and Hexen in 1999. This let's you add anything you want into Hexen (including NPCs) if you have the programming skills to do it. If you instead want something up to date (and a little easier), Zandronum and GZDoom support DECORATE, which is an easier way of coding in your own things for mods, or even entire games; and since Strife has been ported to those two source ports, you could just copy the NPC code from Strife, and then add to Hexen.

Baron of hell, you moron. Why do you think that the CD version exists in the first place? Seriously, you are an absolute idiot if you can't grasp why the CD version is so much larger.

The ISO version must have the audio tracks from the retail disc instead of MIDI...
I have an original copy of Hexen that features this. Maybe this explains why it is 500+mb

HeXeN! Oh how I love thee! It remains in my top 5 video games of all time. It was always superior to DooM and Heretic in my opinion. I have so many memories of this game, primarily playing modem-to-modem games with my friend, and later on serial and LAN games. We always played co-operatively. I was always the cleric and he was always the mage. We had to unplug all the phones in our house so we could dial each other at night to play modem games. My computer was slower so he always had to wait for mine to load. When one of us died, we had to disconnect and dial back so we could reload our save game so we could retain all our items. Later on we got smarter, you could press a key (F11 maybe?) to 'see through each others' eyes'... So we would take turns going through difficult sections, and one of us would stand in front of a level-warp portal and watch the other do difficult jumps. If he started to fall, we would press forward so it would warp us out before he died. Ahaha. So many classic memories.
Highly recommended. Truly. If you have never played HeXeN, you owe it to yourself to try it out. You won't regret it. Amazing atmosphere, amazing gameplay, amazing level design, just everything is top notch. Great!

The long awaited sequel to the Heretic universe, back then...
Man how was I keen and expectant about it! Then I played it and... It was good, but not as good as Heretic... Heretic was a great action game, while Hexen needs you to think too much and you have to orienate much too often on repetetive areas while searching for gears, skulls, gems and other puzzle pieces to solve a whole level hub. Sometimes it really was frustrating, so I always prefered it's prequel a little bit more!
But all in all a very recommendable game, where you have much more to do than just running and fragging around while just searching for keys... A nice challenge, also for your mind! ;)
