It's been 13 years since Nintedo created the future racer genre with its release of F-Zero and time sure has changed a lot. This latest rendition is chock full of play modes, racers and machines to pick from. Most impressively, Nintendo designed F-Zero GX so that it can cross over with the Arcade version (F-Zero AX) to truly put a twist on an already revolutionary game.
GX includes 30 unlockable rides for the game, 30 racers to ride them and an astounding 26 tracks.
Although this latest version of the F-Zero series has added a lot of variety to the solid franchise, it hasn't forgotten its roots. Mastering F-Zero still means memorizing the tracks, learning when to boost and using the occasional attack but really this game is all about speed, speed and speed.
You can play in Grand Prix mode, where you try to win different cups in five-race championships; the multiplayer VS. battle which features up to four players; time attack, or a story mode. The game also has a garage where you can use tickets won in races to unlock vehicles and upgrade items or tinker with the look and abilities of your machine.
What's really cool is that you can save your custom racer and machine to a memory card and then take it down to the arcade to race it on the F-Zero AX arcade machine when it comes out next month. Apparently you will also be able to move data back from the arcade to the cube as well. What a fantastic idea.
The racer AI is just over the top and this game manages to pack a ton of fantastic graphics and immersive sound in races featuring 29 opponents, each with their own style of driving. F Zero Gx Emulator
I know Nintendo frowns upon emulation, as does F-Zero Central, but I feel an exception should be made for two F-Zero games released only in Japan on obscure formats. I've uploaded both of these for convenience.
F-Zero 2 BS download (SNES) - This game was released on the Satellaview (Broadcast Satellite) modem extension for the SNES. It is essentially a fourth cup expansion pack for the original F-Zero, with 4 new vehicles available.

Patched F-Zero X w/64DD Expansion Tracks download (N64) - This is not a 'true' ROM of the expansion pack because 64DD (N64 Disk Drive) emulation does not exist (I might be wrong). The ROM provided is a patched version of F-Zero X with the Jack and Queen cups replaced with the DD-1 and DD-2 cups from the expansion.
This is one situation where emulation is probably the best option. The Satellaview is long gone, and the 64DD + the Expansion Kit is priced around $1000 (used) on Amazon. Nintendo really missed some opportunities with the virtual console to re-release these obscure games and profit from it, but they failed to actualize the VC's true potential.
